The Balloon Man (2023)

The balloon man

A sullen faced teenage girl walked up to a balloon man. She looked at him with empty eyes, her lips pursed and placed a coin on his cart.

He looked at her with a smile and asked, “Which colour would you like?”

“Red, please,” she responded, her face still expressionless. He handed it to her, expecting her to smile, but she didn’t and walked away quickly.

Half an hour later, she walked past him empty handed, sporting a smile. He shrugged and didn’t think anything more of it.

The same thing happened everyday. The girl chose a different colour with a scowl on her face and returned merrily, without a balloon in hand.

On the seventh day the balloon man asked her, “I notice you walk past me every day without the balloon. You don’t seem happy when you buy it, but very happy when you’re without it. I am confused!”

She looked at him with the same downcast face and said, “I label the balloons with the names of my negative feelings. I write them with a marker and let them go. That is why I am happy when you see me without one.”

He was flabbergasted. He had never thought about this use for a balloon. “Which colour would you like today?” he asked.

“Green, please,” she said and handed him a coin.

“Could you please visit me on the way back?” he asked. She nodded and walked away.

On her way back she stoped by, smiling. He handed her a yellow balloon and said, “Please label this ‘JOY’ and keep it with you as a reminder to keep smiling and shining always. This one’s on the house,” he said with a smile.

She gave him a surprised look, took the yellow balloon and waved him good bye. He saw a green balloon bobbing behind her in the sky.
