Andhadhun (2018)

A sharp and witty black comedy, the film is a gem which won a lot of accolades last year.

Ayushmann Khurana plays a blind man who is actually not blind. How this deception lands him in trouble with the cunning Tabu and how he manages to free himself from any wrong-doing forms the crux of the film.

The beauty of the film is of course the writing as well as the editing. Stellar performances aside, it is the vision of the director Sriram Raghavan who is adept at handling such themes, that makes it a captivating watch.

Superb!

Badhai Ho (2018)

A wonderful film about romance, love, a geriatric pregnancy and the impacts it has in a traditional Indian family.

The stars of the film are Neena Gupta, Gajraj Rao and Surekha Sikri, who play excellent characters which display a variety of dynamics. Ayushmann Khurana is his usual non-chalant self given able support by Sanya Malhotra.

The climax of the film will leave you teary eyes with heart-warming emotion.

A beautiful film with excellent writing.

3.5/5

Stree (2018)

A novel genre in Bollywood; ‘Horror Comedy’, the film did exceedingly well because of its messaging.

It stuck to the conventions of building the spooky quotient and having decent special effects in its scares. The purpose though, wasn’t to create fear, but to solve and resolve. They do so with great sensitivity and introspection.

Rajkummar Rao is his usual dependable self and Shraddha Kapoor is mysterious and appropriate.

An entertaining watch!

A fun comedy mystery film, where an unsuspecting couple get caught up in a murder scene. Some slapstick scenes and many laughs later, they unwittingly solve the crime whilst showing us scenic Europe.

A cute chemistry between Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler make it a light watch.

Isn’t it Romantic (2019)

This film turns Rebel Wilson’s single and uneventful life into a montage of all romantic comedies, making us relive our favourite moments through the eyes of a cynic.

It provides the laughs and nostalgia with enough funny sequences and decent characters in Liam Hemsworth, Priyanka Chopra and Adam DeVine.

Enjoy the romantic comedy that doesn’t want to be one!

2.5/5

A raunchy watch.

Chopsticks (2019)

An endearing film about a girl (Mithila Palkar) who lacks confidence, a con-man (Abhay Deol) who doesn’t want to help her but ends up doing so and a local thug (Vijay Raaz) who enables all the drama.

The plot moves along swiftly with humour and wit, keeping it real and current.

I Am Mother (2019)

An Australian science fiction thriller, the film explores an extinction event, where a bunker is run by a robot to raise a human, to eventually repopulate the planet.

What follows is a tale of secrets, untold events, questioning the carer and all their values instilled and the authenticity of the facts communicated.

2.5/5

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (2019)

Zac Efron looks shockingly similar to the serial killer Ted Bundy and the film is a biographical crime thriller based on his life.

While the director Joe Berlinger has avoided the gruesome and gory details, the mind games, manipulation and latent mental illness is on full display. We get a glimpse into how this person thought, acted and possibly approached those horrific acts.

A dark yet compelling watch.

3.5/5

Dumbo (2019)

Greed, power and prejudice are on full display in this tender tale about the gifted baby elephant Dumbo.

Visually stunning and with ample support from Collin Farrell, Danny DeVito, Alan Arkin, Michael Keaton and Eva Green, the film takes us through his journey.

A classic which is revisited for today’s generation, it is dark yet hopeful.
