Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019)

Angelina Jolie has a fitting antagonist in Michelle Pfeiffer in the second instalment of the widely successful Maleficent.

They have retained the cast from the first film, creating a complication with a valid back story for this movie. As the story plays out, we get to know about the background of Maleficent herself.

The climax is violent but in keeping with the spirit of the film and makes you wonder if they will be able to pull off a third part.

Murder on the Orient Express (2017)

Multi-talented Kenneth Branagh is the lead actor, producer and director of this film, based on the classic novel by Agatha Christie, and manages to set himself apart very successfully from his previous characters.

The movie has a host of actors; Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer, and Daisy Ridley, all in supporting roles, each doing their part well to keep the audience guessing who is the murderer.

The opening act and the scenes that follow set up the premise of the film well, and reach a fitting conclusion in an appropriate length of time. Great cinematography and visuals don’t distract from the murder at hand, rather paint a lovely period drama.

An interesting watch, especially if you haven’t read the book.

mother! (2017)

What starts off as shakey camera work, quickly descends into bizzare, finally resting on deeply disturbing.

It may be helpful to read about the film before watching it, as the allegories and symbolism might make more sense. I drew a completely different meaning than what the makers thought of, which shows the film can have many valid interpretations.

Technically brilliant, it’s Jennifer Lawrence’s film all the way. Javier Bardem has his moments, as does Michelle Pfieffer. The opening shot establishes this is not going to be your usual viewing experience. Director Darren Aronofsky has made dark and controversial subjects before, so he’s in his comfort zone. The film though, is thoroughly discomfiting.
