The Social Dilemma (2020)

It is ironic to be writing about social media and posting it on social media, telling people to wake up and realise that we HAVE to change our consumption and reliance and rescue ourselves from social media.

I won’t tell you anything here, just to watch it, end to end, and please enforce screen time with your children and yourselves. Regulate. Have a conversation. Use it for what it was intended, limit your time on it and engage wisely.

This docudrama is a mandatory watch.

5/5

The Halcyon (2017)

A miniseries set in 1940s London, it has an all star cast which mirrors the Downton Abbey style of upstairs and downstairs, with more jazz and high fashion.

The drama starts and ends on a high note, but the series didn’t find the appeal required and was cancelled after its first season. It had promise as it painted a very authentic picture of life during the Second World War.

Great performances by Steven Mackintosh, Olivia Williams, Kara Tointon, Matt Ryan, Hermione Corfield and Mark Benton, with music written by Jamie Cullum.

I enjoyed this period extravaganza with all the familiar twists and turns. High production values and great music make it an entertaining watch.

Away (2020)

A TV series which goes beyond the moon, on the first manned mission to Mars. Hillary Swank is at the helm with a multi-cultural cast, giving a wonderfully nuanced performance.

The makers have taken great care to focus on personal issues, evolution and growth rather than making it an all out sci-fi story.

The ensemble cast all have stories, languages and development of their own, which makes this a truly global show. Based on international co-operation and understanding, the plot promotes it in every way possible.

Josh Charles, Vivian Wu, Mark Ivanir, Ato Essandoh, Ray Panthaki and Talitha Bateman pack powerful performances, which fuel the drama on Earth and in deep space.

Looking forward to season 2!

The Sinner (2017-2020)

A compelling and dark anthology, this mini series is full of mystery and drama surrounding the crime. Delve a little deeper and you see patterns and motivations which you could never imagine or predict.

The mood is dark, the performances intense, the pace slow and the trauma deep. While you uncover one truth, another more complex dilemma presents itself.

The content may be distressing or dark, but there is a strong message there about unresolved grief and the feelings and emotions it can evoke.
