Wishing India a happy Independence Day is like wishing a great grand mother a sweet 16 birthday. Cradling civilisation, she has been around since time immemorial, cajoling the world with her knowledge and stories, welcoming everyone into her home, nourishing her countless generations and supporting their existence with her bountiful nature. But just like the generation we are, we say a quick hello to her and get easily distracted. Take care of her, listen to her wisdom, love her faults as you do her qualities, and above all, respect her resilience.
Happy English birthday… You have aged well 🙂

Independence Day : Resurgence (2016)
20 years later we have a Madame President, a spherical visitor and a reunion of bigger and deadlier alien ships. Unfortunately, director Roland Emmerich hasn’t infused much life into the plot, leaving the fun for the climax, by which time it’s too late.
CGI has its own role in such films, and it’s done well. What was annoying was the poor development of characters and a half baked script which clearly acts as a bridge for part 3. In terms of performance everyone was average at best, with many of the old cast reprising their roles.
We watched the film because of nostalgic value. It was a let down. But that doesn’t mean I won’t watch part 3 🙂

White House Down (2013)
No stranger to blowing up the White House, Director Roland Emmerich (Independance Day, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, amongst other big budget destruction films) has shown us a very ‘real inside drama’ of what could happen if the President was not attacked by outside terrorists.
The motive here is kept hidden until the end, but what you get to see is a President who is not used to violence and a policeman who seizes the moment by protecting him. The film is predictable and a little clichéd, but the ‘protocol’ is fun to watch as it unfolds. Channing Tatum does a fair job in a film that belongs to a big cast and Jamie Foxx is on the border of being a stereo typical leader but gets away by giving the character his individual streak.
In the string of White House movies, this is the most chilled out one to watch as patriotism, Bollywood style drama and Soap Opera style whodunit unfold amongst good quality special effects.
